10 Common WordPress Theme Issues & How To Fix Theme

WordPress has emerged as the most popular website management system and has quickly earned the trust of web developers from around the world.

According to current statistics, around one-third of all the sites on the web are running on WordPress platform, which is enormous. Due to the simplicity of the platform, website owners often try to manage the development work by themselves.

However, in the process of designing a WordPress site, a few issues might emerge with the theme. Whether you are opting for HTML to WordPress conversion or building a new website, some problems are bound to happen.

What are the common WordPress theme issues and their fixes?

We bring you the ten most common theme related issues and easy ways to solve them.

Incompatible theme and Website

Many times after installing a new theme distort the layout of the website, and it often leads to the site displaying non-required blank screens. The white screen issue generally arises because of the loop code, which is present in a WordPress theme, and it is responsible for processing the posts which are to appear on the screen.

Any issue in the loop code leads to the appearance of a white screen. If you encounter the same issue, you can advise your developer to run an overall analysis over the system and check the compatibility with the WordPress version.

Missing Stylesheet

It becomes very frustrating when after downloading and installing an awesome WordPress theme, you get the message ‘Stylesheet Missing.’ It happens when the downloaded zip file of the WordPress theme doesn’t contain a style.css file. To fix the issue, you need to visit the sub-directory of the theme and upload it via the FTP, or you can zip the folder and upload the file to WordPress.

Theme’s homepage and demo don’t match:

It may happen that after installing and equipping a particular theme, your website homepage may not look like the one shown in the demo, and this mainly occurs due to two reasons. Firstly, you can try by adjusting the ‘Front Page DIsplays’ option under the Reading Settings tab. In case your theme needs a page for displaying the actual layout, you can choose the ‘static page’ option, or otherwise, you can go with ‘Your Latest Posts.’ Secondly, it may happen due to a wrong page attribute which you can again correct using the settings tab.

Images don’t look the way they should:

Uploading random images, irrespective of their size and resolution is never a good idea and often gives a trashy look to the website. Also, switching to a new theme sometimes stretches the existing images. You can correct it by following the given steps: Plugins > Add New Button > Regenerate Thumbnails > Install and Activate Plugin. Once you have completed the above steps, just run the installed Plugin and refresh it, it will be done.

Error 404:

During WordPress template customization, most common among all the issues is the famous ‘Error 404’ message by posts. It can generally be resolved by resetting the permalinks settings. In the settings tab, you will find the permalinks option, and there you have to click on the Save button. Though this works in 90 per cent of the cases if it doesn’t, then you may have to update the .htaccess file manually.

Don’t have images in the post, but the new theme uses featured ones:

Majority of blogs doesn’t use the featured images for all the posts. However, if you wish to change the theme and the new one features more images in the posts, it may not be the best idea to update all the posts one by one. A simple way to resolve the issue is by installing and running the ‘Quick Featured Images’ Plugin, it automatically adds featured images to the old posts also.

Recent changes aren’t visible:

This mainly arises due to Browser Cache and Plugin Cache issues. You can clear the browser cache by hitting CTRL+R, and you can do it for Plugin Cache by going to the caching Plugin you use and clearing it. After you have done these steps, your website will display the changes.

Url structure doesn’t look good

You can fix this by going to Settings and selecting the Permalinks option and change it to Post Name. The issue will be resolved within a minute.

Google Analytics doesn’t display actual visitors after the theme change

This issue can be solved by simply installing Google Analytics and following the steps. The Google Analytics Plugin will make sure that you don’t face any such issues in the future. It usually bothers those users who opt for HTML to WordPress conversion.

Images don’t get loaded

There are several reasons which may give rise to this issue, like poor theme selection, bad Plugin, multi-images, poor network connectivity. It’s better to consult your WordPress developer to sort out this issue.
