BEWARE of This Fake Apple Support Call. Check How it Scams iPhone Users

When was the last time you checked your PC health? Do you know your PC requires a regular Check Up!!!

Alert! Phishing scam targets iPhone users | Fake Apple Support call

A new scam campaign is out in the wild, and its potential targets are iPhone users. The support calls received by the users appears to be from Apple Support.

The standards of phishing have reached a new height, now they follow a much more sophisticated approach to look and sound genuine.

The tricksters now make use of websites having the legitimate green padlock symbol in the URL bar making users believe them.

The new scam clearly sets an example of how phishing has evolved in recent times, which is a red signal for every user.

This new phishing scam was testified by a security expert Brian Krebs, who mentioned that Jody Westby, the CEO of security consulting firm Global Cyber Risk, received an autogenerated call on her iPhone.

The call had a message saying multiple servers containing Apple IDs have been compromised, and that she needs to call a 1-866 (Toll-free) number asap.

Scam Call

The request to call an unofficial number is a clear indication stating the whole process to be a scam. However, shockingly the treacherous part of about it is that the automated call displays Apple’s logo, the company’s address, and its actual phone number.

Additionally, when Westby requested a call from an Apple Support executive, the fake call was indexed in the call log of her iPhone with the official number.

This shows how Apple’s iPhone failed to differentiate between the fake and the legitimate call.

The support agent also cleared the air by mentioning that Apple did not contact him and that the call was certainly a scam.

When Krebs called up the same 1-866 number which Westby was asked to contact on, he first went through an automated system, followed by a man with a neutral foreign accent.

Krebs fooled around and said that he was contacted by Apple concerning a security breach, after a few not so clear words Krebs was put on hold and soon the call got disconnected.

The dropped call was unexplained, but Krebs mentioned that this is supposedly another scam that will try to extract personal and financial information, or some kind of payment, from innocent users.

Krebs also mentioned how the iPhone and AT&T, Westby’s carrier, failed to differentiate among the fake call and the real Apple Support call.

With time the attacks may become more refined, so every user is requested to be cautious and look out for themselves.

The best way to fight back against phishing scams is to remember to never disclose personal and financial information to an unknown or unexpected caller.
